Let's do this!
The Good/Bad/and Ugly
The overall concept of this book is brilliant. Truly, it is. It's taboo and that's what has garnered a lot of attention....But-
1) I can't stand Poppy. She's one of those characters that you want to strangle, over and over. I didn't care for her accomplishments. In fact, I viewed them as way for the author to justify/even out Poppy's slutty behavior.
She's been to Haiti, she delivered twins...Mommy and daddy didn't pay attention to me...I went to Dartmouth, blah blah....
She's one of those characters folks. Paragraph long explanations to make it look like she can hold a candle to Father Bell.
2) Father Bell's sister, Lizzy, was molested by the former Priest. I'm sorry, and I know I'm going to hell for saying this, but I kinda laughed at this. It's not funny, by no means. But so predictable. I kept telling my husband, "Oh, if the altar boys are molested...." I remember in 2005? When the first Priest came out and it was such a big deal...all of the Michael Jackson comparisons...
The seriousness of that situation (Lizzy) went out the door.
3) The cursing made it hard to believe he was a devout Priest. It reminded me of these girls that would always say "You're going to hell" and then light up a cigarette.
4) 7 pages in and Father Bell has thrown away all he's been taught, cause' this girl is just so fly....Her gap-tooth is so damn sexy to him that he has to whip it out in the shower and give into his carnal nature.
5) If I never read "Bright Red Lipstick" again, it will be too soon.
6) Millie. Aka, the woman created to make Father Bell's actions appropriate. After the piano incident, she appears in the kitchen and is all "You're still a man....a young man..ect..."
Really?
7) I enjoyed the concept, the idea of this book.
8) The writing was up to par, minus a few grammar issues.
9) I didn't feel a connection between the characters. There was paragraph, upon paragraphs of Poppy's confession, and I just skipped over it after reading the first 5 pages of the same stuff. I think the author tried too hard to make it work. Again, a lot of this had to do with how Poppy was portrayed, and her personality.
In Conclusion: 2 stars.
Recommend: No...This is an acquired taste, folks.
